Doongalik Studios Art Gallery, Marina Village at Paradise Island hosted the official opening of Roddie Pinder’s Woodturning Show on Thursday, November 4 from 6-9 pm.
Roddie has been travelling to Nassau for many years from his home in Spanish Wells, Eleuthera to host this annual show. It is a much anticipated event at the beginning of the winter season which has always been patronized by an appreciative public.
“We are very pleased to host Roddie’s Annual Woodturning Show this year as we have been showcasing his exquisite woodwork since Doongalik opened at Marina Village in 2005,” stated Gallery Manager, Pam Burnside.
“Roddie is well known both locally and internationally as the premiere wood turner in The Bahamas and he has mentored most of the other wood turners in the country. We have such beautiful woods in The Bahamas and being able to recycle trees that have been damaged or destroyed by turning them into works of art is amazing.”
“This is the first time that the Show will be held at Doongalik Studios Art Gallery,” stated the artist. “I have a loyal following of Bahamian patrons which I am very thankful for and this year visitors will also be able to participate in the event as it will be on display for a week instead of only one day. I have been busy producing functional woodwork for this Show including vases, boxes, bowls, candle and potpourri holders as well as several specialty items.”
Roddie Pinder was born and grew up in Spanish Wells, Eleuthera, Bahamas. A former Out Island Commissioner, Roddie’s love for woodworking lay dormant until he became friends with Edwin Ferguson from Nassau who was well known for making wooden spinning tops. After the death of another family friend, James Lowe, the family gave Roddie his lathe and a new career was born.
Roddie studied briefly with world renowned wood turner Rude Ofolnik and has never looked back. He uses primarily native woods along with other exotic hard woods and presently works out of his basement workshop on Russell Island, Spanish Wells. His work can be found in collections locally and internationally.
