Search For World’s Best Health Care Leading Bahamians to Michigan

Michael Maura, a businessman from the Bahamas, would not settle on anyone but the best to treat his prostate cancer.
He called and visited several top U.S. centers, read books by leading specialists and searched the Web.

His decision-making led him to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where urology chief Dr. Mani Menon, a world leader in robotic prostate cancer surgery, has attracted 600 patients from 50 states and 22 countries.

“I’m very glad I came here,” Maura said last week as he headed to a two-bedroom guest apartment Henry Ford offers patients.

In a state better known for its autos and sports teams, Michigan hospitals draw patients from as far away as India, Brazil and Turkey in a form of reverse medical tourism. Patients come to seek out several dozen high-powered medical teams for cancer treatment, spinal cord rehabilitation, epilepsy and blinding eye conditions in babies, among other care.
