Bahamas Teacher Convicted of Sex Crimes

Andre Birbal, 48, was found guilty in the Supreme Court on Wednesday of having unnatural sexual intercourse with two of his former male students at Eight Mile Rock High School in Grand Bahama.

In a rare fit of justice in an otherwise dysfucntional legal brought back guilty verdicts in six of the eight charges against the former art teacher.

Sentencing is set for February 1, 2011.

During his summation to the jury, Justice Hartman Longley told jurors to consider each of the eight counts separately and bring a separate verdict on each count.

Two male students testified that Mr Birbal gave them money to have sex with him in the classroom and at his apartment. It is also said that Birbal took nude photos of the boys, who were only in the seventh grade when Birbal first had sex with them.

The teacher continued to have sex with the boys over the years until they graduated from High School.

Trinidadian-born Birbal was an art teacher at Eight Mile Rock High School for 18 years. he resigned in 2009 after allegations surfaced.

After allegation  intially surfaced Birbal was allowed to leave the country and was later apprehended in the United States on unrelated charges.

Rumnours surfaced that Birbal was allowed to leave the Bahamas because he threatend to tell what he knew about certain police officers who were also invoved in illegal sex acts with children.

No evidence of such allegations was revealed in court.
