Attorney Dennis Gomez was shot five times early Saturday morning. He died at Princess Margaret Hospital several hous later.
Gomez, 57, was the husband of Magistrate Jeanine Weech-Gomez.
Gomez was shot as he was leaving his office at York Street off Shirley Street at around 1:30am with a young girl.
It is not clear why Mr Gomez was at his office with the young female in the early hours on a Saturday morning.
As Mr Gomez and his female escort left the law office, they were reportedly approached by two men who were allegedly waiting for them outside the office. One of the men is said to have been armed with a hand gun.
It is reported that a struggle ensued between Mr Gomez and the men, which resulted in Mr Gomez being shot five times.
He was taken to hospital by his female companion, where he died a short time later.
The incident was initially called a “robbery gone bad”, but police and some family members are sceptical of that as there was nothing reported taken from Mr Gomez or his female escort.
Gomez is the ninth murder victim for 2011, putting the Bahamas ahead of its record-setting murder rate of last year.
Mr Gomez, a former police officer, was part of a prominent Bahamian family, sometimes immersed in controversy. He was the lead attorney in the scandal-tainted Imperial Insurance Company mortgage interest rates charges case in the mid-1990s.
Dennis Gomez was a cousin of Archbishop Drexel Gomez and attorney Damien Gomez. Other family members include Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez and Dr Perry Gomez.
