In 2010 there were 11,205 crimes reported throughout the islands of the Bahamas. Only 1,152 of these cases have been closed by the police. That is a dismal 10 per cent crime detection rate.
In 2009, statistics showed a 14 per cent crime detection rate. 10,008 cases were reported for the year with 1,433 being resolved.
During a press conference Assistant Commissioner Glenn Miller stated, “The year 2010 can be described as one of the most challenging years in recent history for law enforcement officers.”
Last year there were 9,517 crimes against property and 1,688 crimes against the person. Police reported detection rates of 12 per cent or worse in crimes against property. In crimes against persons police showed an average detection rate of 22.5.
Police statistics showed that only 141 of the 919 reported armed robbery cases were resolved. That is 15 per cent as compared to 18 per cent in 2009.
Police statistics indicate a 70 per cent detection rate for murders, claiming that 66 of the 94 murders were resolved – but while police claim that a high rate of murders were resolved the courts turned over a low rate of convictions.
Murder increased by nine per cent last year with 94 murders reported as compared to 86 in 2009. Armed robberies went up also with 919 in 2010 and 882 in 2009.
