PLP leader Perry Christie says that if the PLP win the next general election, his party will reneg on the sale of BTC to Cable & Wireless.
Mr Christie gave right-thinking bahamians another resonj to not vote for the PLP, saying that should the PLP win the next general election, he will “aggressively renegotiate” the terms of the sale of BTC to Cable & Wireless.
Calling the deal “repugnant” to the national interest, Christie put Cable & Wireless on notice that a PLP government would re-examine the provisions of the deal with the intention of renegotiating it.
Such action is not without precedent.
The PLP “re-negotiated” the terms of the Hawksbill Creek agreement, insisting that the powers of immigration control be taken from a private company and returned to the Bahamian government.
“We do not believe that it (Cable and Wireless) is a trustworthy, reliable and capable strategic partner for the Bahamas and BTC. We call on the government to cease and desist in pursuing the sale as they have announced it,” Christie said.
Mr Christie’s statement is ironic, given the fact when he was the Prime Minister, he tried desparately to sell the government-owned telecommunications company to a shell company secretly owned by PLP cronies.
