The Bahamas National Committee for the United World Colleges has announced that application forms are now available online for interested students wishing to apply for placements at United World Colleges for the 2011-2013 IB Programme. The Committee welcomes applications from public schools from across the nation in addition to students attending private schools.

The United World College movement is unique. It is the only global educational movement that brings together students from all over the world – selected on personal merit, irrespective of race, religion, and politics – with the explicit aim of fostering peace and international understanding.  High academic standards, a strong emphasis on community service and a wide range of cultural and outdoor activities are all part of the challenge and excitement of a rigorous two-year United World Colleges education.

The Committee, which has been in existence since 1971 and whose leadership included the late LB Johnson, is extremely proud that just under ninety Bahamian students have graduated with the highly regarded and widely respected International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma from United World Colleges in Canada, the USA, Hong Kong, Wales, Costa Rica, and South Africa. Last year six Bahamian students had the opportunity to commence their studies at Colleges in Hong Kong, South Africa, Costa Rica, Canada and the USA, while five are completing their second year course work.

Committee members are busy making plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary with several special events slated to take place later this year. National Committee chairperson, Mrs BJ Deveaux stated, “In this anniversary year the Committee would like to publicly commend former UWC students who are now outstanding citizens of The Bahamas and the world, to encourage their present students who continue to make the country proud at their respective schools, and to sincerely thank all those persons who have supported and assisted the Committee in its efforts and growth.

We look forward to continuing to promote this very important programme not only as a means of exposing The Bahamas to the world but for also providing the opportunity to expose more Bahamians to other cultures. Education, dialogue and tolerance are important tools that must be developed in order to work towards achieving peace and a sustainable future for the world.”
