I am a young citizen of this great Commonwealth of The Bahamas. I am well positioned to hear both the cries of the unions and more importantly the complaints of the general population, in particular, the age group of 18-30.
My age group is the generation of technological advances. My age group is the driver in this computer driven “train” in society, while the elder generation (Baby Boomers and Senior Citizens) are merely the passengers, trying to get on board.
How is it that the unions, in particular the BCPOU, feel that it is their right to make themselves the voices of the Bahamian consumers in regard to the sale of BTC to Cable and Wireless?
Mr Evans and others promise a “small Egypt” (or mini riot, that is my understanding of it) situation in order to fight the fight of equality and Bahamianisation because BTC “belongs to the people.”
What these union members fail to realise, is that the Bahamian people, especially the youth of this nation are fed up with BTC and its mediocrity, high prices and the list goes on. The young people of this nation are tired of settling for less when it comes to telecommunications, particularly in the cellular department.
We are tired of the “safety” of being “Blackberry users” because BTC cannot diversify its market or get proper 3g and 4g connections for Iphone/Ipad/Droid cellular holders. We are tired of airtime credits or “minutes” that last only for an hour’s worth of conversation at the least.
We are tired of high monthly bills for packages that promise convenience. We are tired! And the young people applaud the sale of BTC.
There is a line in a popular song that states, “If you knew better, you would do better.” Hopefully with C&W, we will know better.
