Dedication is not without reward at L. W. Young Jr. High School on Bernard Road. Fifty-Six students earning Grade Point Averages of 3.0 and above participated in an awards ceremony designed to celebrate their success, reward the improvement of hard-workers and congratulate their achievements.
In attendance was Mrs. Dressler Sherman, Superintendant for the Northeastern Division of schools, The Honorable Fred Mitchell, Member of Parliament for the Fox Hill Constituency, and numerous parents and well-wishers. During her address, Mrs. Sherman recognized the efforts of Young Chef Competition Winner Anastacia PapaGeorge (also of L. W. Young) as an example of being diligent in concocting the right formula for success.
Being awarded during the ceremony was Shernard Gray an 8th grade student who achieved the highest honor with a GPA of 3.63 and was awarded an ACER mini-laptop by The Honorable Fred Mitchell, MP for Fox Hill.
Two female seventh grade students Karina Davila and Latoré Basden, both earned a GPA of 3.55 respectively and were also awarded with laptops courtesy of Dr. Tyrone Bartlett and Mr. Jerome Sweeting.
An unsuspected surprise was given to 8th grade student Samaria Albury who showed the most remarkable improvement in her GPA. Ms. Albury’s G.P.A. had been a 0.68 at the midpoint of the Christmas Term and had climbed to a 1.60 by December. Rewarding her for her hard work was Pastor Diana Francis, President of The Bahamas’ Student Christian Movement.
Mrs. Janet Nixon, Principal of L. W. Young Jr. High School states, “We are enthused about the accomplishments of our students so far and look forward to their continued success. The gains they have made show the power of partnership between parents, The Ministry of Education, educators and corporate Bahamas in the enhancement of the educational experience for our children.
