Do the heads of governments of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) really expect the people of our region to take them seriously? We don’t ask just to be cute.
The 22nd Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government held in Grand Anse, Grenada from February 25 to 26, 2011 was at last count attended by all countries at the level of prime minister or president, except for The Bahamas which was represented by its foreign minister.
This meeting was convened at a time when Caricom is in the throes of the worst crisis in its history. Indeed, the end-of-meeting communiqué is replete with references to the recognition of this and the global financial crisis. Yet, this awareness only elicited the ritual of chanting fidelity to regional integration and hortatory pledges of a re-energised commitment to the goals of Caricom.
