The Customs Department expects to prosecute two companies this year following the discovery of what appears to be a “shocking” level of corruption involving the evasion of “millions of dollars” in import duty and Stamp Tax payments.
Comptroller of Customs, Glenn Gomez, said that under the current legislative regime, “98 per cent” of cases in which businesses are believed to have sought to evade paying funds owed to the Customs Department are dealt with “in house” to avoid the time and expense involved in going to court, and the level of investigation required.
