Bahamas National Chess Open Starts Next Week

There is less than two weeks before the start of the highly competitive Bahamas National Chess Open 2011. At least four former National Champions will compete for the title.

The 2nd Bahamas National Chess Open 2011 is scheduled for Friday April 15 to Sunday April 17. A guest player from Tallahassee, Dr. Daaim Shabazz, has confirmed his participation in the event.

Dr. Shabazz is rated by both the World Chess Federation and the US Chess Federation. This tournament is expected to be the BCF’s most exciting and strongest tournament for 2011.

There are three sections – Candidates (Invitation only), Open and Scholastic and also $1,000 in cash prizes available to winners of the three categories!

Invited players include the following: Ken Gibson – 2008 and 2010 Bahamas National Champion; Yan Lyansky – 2009 Bahamas National Champion; Charles Duncombe – 2006 Bahamas National Champion; NM Byron Small – 1992 and 1997 Bahamas National Champion Marvin Taylor.

Other invited players include: Elton Joseph, Joseph Ferguson, Chappel Whyms and Hatchie Robinson.

The BCF is coming off a successful 2011 Scholastic Chess Championship won by Travis Miller from Government High School.
