Yet another Bahamian female swimmer is making waves in the water.
On the heels of Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace’s double NCAA sprint titles, McKayla Lightbourn is proving that she will also be a force to reckon with at this year’s RBC Swimming Nationals. The latter broke her own national record in the 200 meters (m) Individual Medley (IM) recently, lowering the new mark to 2:19.72. The old record of 2:20.09 was set by her at the 2008 CARIFTA Swimming Championships in Aruba.
Her new record is still about a second off the qualifying time for this summer’s FINA World Championships, but coach Andy Knowles is pleased with her progression and is looking forward to her improving her times as the Nationals draw near.
Lightbourn is expected home for the RBC Swimming Nationals, which is set for June 18-21, at the Betty Kelly Kenning National Swim Complex. The 14th FINA World Championships are scheduled for July 16–31, in Shanghai, China, and the 16th Pan American Games will be held from October 14–30, in Guadalajara, Mexico. Lightbourn is hoping to be a member of both teams as well as the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Confederation (CCCAN) Championships team.
