Sir Durward Knowles presents his Olympic gold medal to Minister of Culture Charles Maynard, to be placed in the National Museum of The Bahamas.
The country’s first two Olympic medals, and Sailing World Championships trophy, can now be seen at the National Museum of The Bahamas/Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Corporation. The gold and bronze medals won by eight-time Olympian Sir Durward ‘The Sea Wolf’ Knowles were presented by him to the museum yesterday, during an official ceremony at the Collins House Grounds.
The medals and trophy are the first sporting awards to be showcased in the museum. Although the decision to add the hardware to the museum’s collection was not an easy one for Knowles, he is hoping that the immeasurable gifts can inspire the nation’s youth to aim high.
Knowles has made significant contributions to The Bahamas, in both sports and community projects. He was knighted in 1996 and received his O.B.E as an awardee on the 1964 Queen’s Honors List. In 1997, he was awarded The Bahamas’ Order of Merit Award.
