In a rare show of wisdom, three prominent PLPs are moving to block the nominations of several members of Parliament who they feel would contribute to a PLP loss at the polls.
Prominent members of the PLP party are trying to convince leader Perry Christie to drop a few bad apples before the losers contribute to a loss at the polls.
The irony is that it seems to be a case of the pot calling the kettle black. The three PLP members who are calling to block the nominations have proven themselves useless, or have their own tainted pasts.
George Smith, who was accused in the Commission of Inquiry as being on Carlos Lehder’s payroll; Philip Galanis, who was fired from the bank he worked at presumably for embezzlement; and Raynard Rigby who has pretty much proven himself incompetent, are the ones calling to block the nominations of their fellow PLP members.
The candidates whom the trio says the PLP should drop include; Shane Gibson (Golden Gates), Vincent Peet (North Andros), Obie Wilchcombe (West End and Bimini), V. Alfred Gray (MICAL), Leslie Miller (Blue Hills), Anthony Moss and Picewell Forbes.
Few Bahamians would disagree with those selections. All of the individuals named are considered political losers.
In a letter to Mr Christie, dated May 5, Smith, Rigby and Galanis point to the infamous Greenberg, Quinlan & Rosner report which was commissioned by the PLP after the party’s loss at the polls in 2007.
The researchers concluded that the PLP would have to clean house and advance a more progressive social agenda.
The most important advice given in the report was to can Perry Christie, whose indecisiveness and weak leadership the researchers said was the main cause of the PLP loss.
Despite the fact that Mr Christie is to blame for the PLP loss in 2007, Smith, Rigby and Galanis stopped short of calling for Christie’s resignation.
