For the second time in less than a year, a substantial amount of money was stolen from the Administrator’s office in Acklins.
Administrator Gregory Knowles told a local paper that the money was public funds sent by central government to pay salaries and cover public expenses on the remote island.
A team of CDU investigators are headed to Acklins to investigate the weekend burglary.
While Mr Knowles could not immediately confirm the amount of money that was in the safe, it is estimated that there was at least $100,000 in it.
The fact that the safe was cemented to the floor did not deter the thieves from taking it.
There is no alarm system in the building and no police guard.
Last September, Mr Knowles and his teen-age son were allegedly forced by gunmen to open the safe and were robbed of over $200,000. Nobody has ever been arrested for that crime, which is odd seeing as there are only 600 people on the island, nearly half of them children.
Police say they will provide an update on the matter once they have concluded their investigation.
