For years, it was a crime to generate your own power outside the BEC grid. Now, after admitting their incompetence, BEC wants people with generators to use them.
Due to incompetence, mismanagement and poor maintenance of generators, BEC is unable to produce enough electricity to meet the needs of the Bahamian people.
So, after years of prohibiting independent power generation, except in emergencies, BEC is asking that those with private generators use them during peak hours to lessen the strain on the grid.
The new plan, dubbed the “Generation Assistance Plan”, will hopefully reduce the annoying blackouts that have plagued several areas.
Customers with large standby generators with a capacity of more than 1000kw are asked to participate.
Making more excuses for their incompetence, BEC issued a statement that said said:
“As a result of unforeseen challenges, the corporation is unable to generate sufficient electricity to meet customer demand during peak periods. In an effort to minimise the impact to residential customers, BEC has put in place a Generation Assistance Plan (GAP).”
The “peak periods” referred to are from 10:30am – 5:00pm and 7:30pm – 11:00pm.
Three BEC generators developed problems last week due to poor maintenance. This resulted in power cuts across the island. One of the units is still out of service.
BEC’s incompetent chairman, Michael Moss, just recently assured the public that the company can produce enough power for the current needs of New Providecne, and also the huge Baha Mar resort.
Was it rhetoric or an outright lie?
BEC also said they are looking to rent some generators as back-up during peak summer months.
