NEW YORK, NY – The streets of New York City’s fabled Harlem suburb – a mecca for jazz and African American culture – rang with the sounds of Bahamian music, as the St. Anne’s School Choir presented a concert entitled “Bahamian Style” at the Harlem School for the Arts.
While in New York, the choir – led by Karrolann L. Jervis, Darrell Hurston and Bridgette Barrett – paid a courtesy call on Bahamas Consul General to New York Dr. Rhonda Chipman-Johnson, who was proud of their performance and accomplishments.
“They really did a fantastic job up here,” Dr. Chipman-Johnson enthused.
The choir toured various sites including the Rockefeller Plaza, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and the Museums of Modern Art and Natural History. Choir members also had the opportunity to view the Broadway Show “The Phantom of the Opera”.
The choir which consists of a total of 70 persons from grades 7 – 12, boasts of being one of the leading High School choirs in the country. In 2004, the choir recorded a compact disc entitled “By The Grace Of God” the school’s motto, and out of this recording came the nomination for the People’s Choice Cacique Award for the song “It Ain’ Ova” written by Mr. Darrell Hurston and led by KB. The choir has also won a number of song competitions and National Arts Festivals.
As ambassadors for St. Anne’s School, the choir has performed at various government and private functions, and in the past has travelled to Eleuthera, Atlanta GA, and Miami FL.
