Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Charles Maynard hopes to bring an influx of visitors from untapped markets by capitalising on sport and entertainment tourism. The minister is pushing for new legislation to create a National Sports Authority (NSA) to oversee and manage the sports sector.
The NSA would be a quasi-government body established under the Bill for an Act for the Establishment of the National Sports Authority of the Bahamas. It would not only oversee and manage the country’s sporting facilities and assets but also promote the facilities.
A clause in the bill also allows for the creation of a national sports fund, which would also be managed by the NSA.
The implementation of this bill is considered particularly important because sports is hoped to play a vital role in reducing crime and violence by creating positive alternatives for young people.
