Bahamians across the board are utterly disgusted with the nation’s monoply utility company after suffering almost daily power outages in 90 degree heat.
Today’s excuse sounds eerily similar to last week’s lame justification for continuous power outages in various parts of New Providence.
The fact is, the company is bloated, from the top down, with lazy, incompetent workers who are incapable of keeping a proper maintenance schedule for the generators.
In a typically Bahamian fashion, they wait until the generator fails instead of maintaining it in a responsible manner. One only has to look at parks, beaches, roads and traffic lights to see that this is “the Bahamian way”.
The problem started during the corrupt PLP administration of Lynden Pindling. Pindling’s henchmen would hand out jobs to incompetent friends and cronies in an effort to gain votes. Many of those garbage employees are still working at BEC, some now in management positions, making for a miserable and incompetent workforce.
Events during the past year have shown that BEC President Michael Moss is completely inept. Mr Moss apparently has a book of tired excuses which he pulls out every week to explain why he can not keep the power on.
Some wonder if Mr Moss ever listens to himself as he clumsily tries to explain his incompetence.
“This is an unusual situation. One of the the units that was out of service is the one that just completed an overhaul,” the maladroit Minister told the press.
The above statement doesn’t inspire much confidence in the people who “overhauled” the unit. Nor does it say much for Mr Moss’ management skills.
For weeks, outages have plagued New Providence while several Family Islands have had unresolved power problems for years.
The public’s frustration with BEC was made quite apparent last week when dozens of Bahamians vented their anger towards the company on it’s corporate Facebook page. The company simply removed the page, instead of responding appropriately to justified complaints, again showing a contempt for their customers and an indifference to the problems they are causing for Bahamians.
If Prime Minister Ingraham has any intention of keeping the FNM in power after the next election, he would fire Mr Moss, post haste.
