Adelaide Primary 80 Percent Haitian

Education Minister Desmond Bannister has revealed that the student population of Adelaide Primary, a government school, is 80 percent Haitian.

Mr Bannister was addressing the Rotary Club of West Nassau at Graycliff Restaurant on the issue of immigrants in the public school system.

“The school has a student population of 136, with 10 teachers and two administrators. The principal’s records show that approximately 80 percent of the students are from Haitian-Creole homes with parents/guardians who do not speak English,” he said.

Bannister emphasized that policy in The Bahamas dictates that all children in the country, except those on visitors permits, are entitled to access to education.
