A woman, nine months pregnant, was shot in the face and the neck only steps away from the intersection of of Prince Charles Drive and Beatrice Drive. She died almost instantly.
The murder occurred around 10:30pm last night, allegedly in full view of the woman’s teenage son, who was sitting in a car nearby. The woman, who has yet to be indentified, was said to be visiting a man at a construction site in the area.
This is the third woman in one week to be brutally murdered in The Bahamas.
Onieka Johnson 21 was stabbed to death on San Salvador Island on August 14. Her body was found at Club Med, where she worked as a security guard.
On August 12, high school graduate Courtney McKenzie, 17, was shot to death after an argument with a man who she was allegedly formerly dating.
Also, on July 30, a pregnant woman was one of three people murdered in the Carmichael area.
Police are overwhelmed. The murder rate continues to increase but the detection rate is falling. Police have closed only 38 of the 91 murders that have occurred so far this year.
In July, there were 20 murders in one month, a record for the violence-plagued Bahamas.
The number of murders in The Bahamas will most likely reach triple digits for the first time in the country’s history by the end of the year.
