The government will decide which areas of The Bahamas will benefit from duty free exemptions so residents can re-build their properties and replace equipment and other items lost when Hurricane Irene pummelled their islands last week.
Speaking to reporters at Odyssey Aviation before departing for Abaco aboard the Aga Khan’s helicopter, Ingraham said, “A number of islands have been affected by hurricanes before and they know, speaking for myself, my government, that we have a history of responsiveness and effectiveness and compassion.
Ingraham noted that items that will be declared duty free might be fishing boats, agricultural supplies, housing materials and electrical materials.
He said different islands will have exemptions for different periods depending on the extent of their damage.
