Tropical Storm Gert Strengthens In The Caribbean

MIAMI, USA — Bermuda was under a tropical storm warning on Sunday as Tropical Storm Gert moved towards the island, strengthening slowly.

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, at 5:00 pm EDT, the center of Gert was located about 255 miles south-southeast of Bermuda moving toward the north-northwest near 8 mph. A gradual turn toward the north was expected later Sunday night or Monday morning

On the forecast track, the centre of Gert is expected to pass near or just east of Bermuda by Monday afternoon. Reports from an Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 45 mph, with higher gusts.

Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles, mainly to the east of the centre. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1008 mb (29.77 inches).
