The United States Embassy in Nassau issued an emergency e-mail warning U.S. citizens to be aware of the recent dengue fever outbreak in The Bahamas.
“In the past few weeks, over 200 cases have been reported, and almost 1,000 cases have been reported of individuals suffering from symptoms that match dengue,” the warnng stated.
Because the symptoms are similar to a bad cold, it is possible that thousands more have contracted the disease but have not officially reported it.
The embassy also reported that The Bahamas government claimed to have begun efforts to control the spread of the disease.
The Bahamas government says they are spraying areas, although no evidence of that was reported. Quite often, the Bahamas government tells the U.S. Embassy whatever it is the U.S. wants to hear without actually following up the talk with action.
Despite the fact that dengue fever is fast approcahing epidemic levels, the Ministry of Tourism has yet to issue its own travel warning.
