Coroner’s Court Hopelessly Backlogged

The mystery surrounding the deaths of a mother and daughter whose bodies were found floating in waters near Prince George Wharf last week could continue for a long while as there are already more than 200 cases that need to be heard in the Coroner’s Court.

Coroner Linda Virgill said the file had not yet reached her desk.

Virgill said the court will pick up where investigators left off, however, she was unable to comment on when that will be as all inquests have been stalled pending the completion of renovation of the Coroner’s Court.

In July, the government signed a contract for the renovation of the Royal Victoria Gardens building, which houses the court.

“Inquests will begin as soon as the construction concludes,” said Virgill, adding that she hopes to resume hearing cases again by the end of the month.
