City Market employees are being recklessly shuffled around and their work hours cut to bare minimum as the company heads towards failure under the inept management of Mark Finlayson.
Employees, fearing that they’ll never see a dime of their pension fund, are demanding severance pay packages as the number of stores continues to shrink.
The most insulting part of this drama is the rude and unprofessional manner in which Mr Finlayson treats his employees.
Without notice, Mr Finlayson stripped employees of their health insurance plans. Some employees did not find out until they visited a doctor and were told their insurance was no longer vaild.
Rather than communicating with employees in a respectful manner, employees have been receiving information from news reports on the radio, or they have shown up for work only to find paper signs taped to storefront doors, informing them to report to other locations.
Some employees, who have worked for the company for over 20 years, are seeing their hours reduced to 10-12 hours per week, not even earning enough money to live on.
Many workers have expressed their mistrust of the Finlayson family and are not interested in working for them any longer.
One union administrator said it was as if the company was trying to discourage employees to prompt them to quit so the company will not have to pay them a severance package, or honour pension obligations.
Union officals are threatening to file a trade dispute with the Labour board.
