Operation Justice Bahamas unveiled evidence it says shows that the Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) has been using the unit 12 steam unit to a greater capacity and not using the rented Aggrekko units, as a result customers have been billed an additional three cents to cover the cost of their full capacity.
“The facts reveal that unit 12, which was described by (Whitney) Heastie as inefficient and in his exact words a less efficient unit is being used and it’s being used more than the Aggreko unit,” Rodger Johnson, a professional engineer said.
Turbine and alternator readings secured by the group from sources within the company for the dates of October 16, 19, 22 and 24, 2011 show that the Aggreko units, except for a few hours on the first two dates was generating less power.
On October 16, the Aggreko units generated more mega-watts than steam unit 12 for only seven hours and for an even shorter period of three hours on October 19.
Megawatts generated each hour by unit 12 on October 22 and 24 exceeded what was generated by the Aggreko units for both days.
At its height on October 24, the steam unit generated 6.5 megawatts, while the Aggreko units created 0.6 megawatts.
Johnson explained the Aggreko unit is the 45 megawatt unit that uses diesel and costs one-and-a-half times as much as Bunker-C.
