NASSAU (Bahamas) – Five kilometers off the coast of the Bahamas in the dead of night, a submarine is lowered into the water. Designed for underwater exploration, the sub is capable of carrying three people up to a depth of 1,000 metres. A depth that only a handful of people have ever dived.
According to Mr Patrick Lahey, president of Triton Submarines descending into the depths is a lot like climbing a mountain. While small on top – it could be a small island peeking out through the oceans – it could be a vast expanse down below. “And no one has really explored what’s down here,” Mr Lahey said.
While the Triton 3300/3 is only capable of submerging up to 3,300 feet, or 1,000 metres, its desired goal is to descend to the Challenger deep section of the Mariana Trench north of Papua New Guinea – the deepest part of the world’s oceans, said business media website fastcoexist.com.
The website said the Triton 3300/3 may be a stepping stone to the Triton 36000/3, which will take scientists – and the super-rich – into a whole new realm 36,000 feet below sea level.
