Facebook Outage Raises Questions

Why was Facebook down in the Bahamas?

For many, over the past weekend, the pastime of catching up with friends, reading new inspirational cards and just socializing via Facebook was interrupted.

While the real reason for this problem – which appeared to have affected only The Bahamas – has not been identified, some users have given their views on what they felt the real problem was.

Quite a few in this political season, deemed politics to be at fault.

One news agency said, they called California to check on the shutdown and was directed to check the internet providers.

Oswald Brown on his page after the service was restored told his story stating that now he knows what it feels like to be addicted to something.

“When I tried to get on Facebook last night (Friday night) and couldn’t do so, I was absolutely frantic. I called Cable Bahamas and a technician ‘walked’ me through several steps on the phone to try and correct the problem, but he eventually concluded that Facebook was down. I didn’t know what to think. All sort of things crossed my mind, even the conspiratorial theory suggested by Bahamas Press that the temporary shutdown of Facebook was politically motivated. Don’t know about that, but it’s good to again be able to communicate via this medium.”

Keith G. Cooper in his response to Brown wanted to know if anyone would ever know why Facebook went down and shared information on how it can this be prevented (if possible) from happening again?

The Freeport News was not been able to catch up with the internet providers, but is working on it to get this information out to our readers.

For some not being able to log onto Facebook was a tragedy.

One person said, “I actually stared at my laptop and asked a friend, “so what did I do online before Facebook?” “Oh the shame of being an addict!”

Another said that the problem was attributed to a hacking of the social network.

A news report stated that an anonymous hacker collective have released an internal document that gives an exclusive insight into three 2012 hacking campaigns designed to “punish” the world’s “wicked.”

The report continued to say recalling police raids on Occupy Wall Street and Los Angeles camp sites, Anonymous blames the major of over 18 U.S. mayor cities of “the indiscriminate and unprovoked arrest and brutalization of thousands of protesters.”

On New Year’s Eve, the collective launched “Operation Hiroshima,” aimed at releasing as much “incriminating” information as possible on a seemingly random list of targets. As well as the personal addresses, emails and passwords of high-profile politicians such as New York’s Mayor Bloomberg, the release also contained data reportedly taken from the FBI and the New York and Oakland police departments.

While they may be U.S. aimed, there have been other reports of other countries having been affected.
