Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived Sunday evening in Venezuela, the first leg of a five-day Latin American tour, which also includes Nicaragua, Cuba and Ecuador, aimed at strengthening Tehran’s relations with these nations.
The presidential plane that took Ahmadinejad to Venezuela arrived at 1900 hours local time at the Maiquetia International Airport, in the state of Vargas, where he was welcomed by Venezuelan Vice-president Elias Jaua, Telesur reported.
According to the TV channel, the Iranian head of state will meet with President Chavez on Monday at the Miraflores presidential palace.
During his stay in the South American nation, Ahmadinejad is scheduled to sign agreements in the sectors of tourism, trade, science, energy, the environment, housing and others.
The Iranian President is being accompanied by his ministers of Foreign Affairs, Ali Akbar Salehi; Trade, Industry and Mines, Mehdi Gazanfari; Energy, Majid Namju, and Economy, Seyed Shamsedin Hoseini.
Following his visit to Venezuela, Ahmadinejad will travel to Nicaragua on Tuesday to attend the inauguration ceremony of President Daniel Ortega, and later he will continue with his tour by visiting Cuba and Ecuador. (RHC)
