Several young men who were causing trouble at Junkanoo were brought before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez on Tuesday and scolded for their “stupid” actions.
The no-nonsense magistrate, fed up with the high levels of violence on the streets of The Bahamas, denied bail for two of the punks, sending them to jail until their next court appearances.
Shaquille Culmer, 18, who was accused of throwing bottles into the crowd, was told in no uncertain terms that people like him were ruining the fun of Junkanoo and causing innocent people to suffer.
“You could have caused a stampede out there and innocent people could have gotten crushed because of your stupidity,” the Magistrate said as he scolded the punk.
Culmer was sent to jail to cool his heels until his next court appearance on Thursday.
Another punk, Ran Rolle, 20, of Ragged Island Street was reprimanded after it was discovered he had bought a knife to the parade.
Rolle told the court he had no intention of hurting anyone with the box cutter he had.
Rolle answered, “No”, when asked by the Chief Magistrate if he had intended to open any boxes at Junkanoo.
Then, Gomez sent the punk to jail until his next court appearance on Thursday.
To the delight of most Bahamians, Magistrate Gomez made it clear than he was fed up with the antics of young street punks and that he would be showing little tolerance to troublemakers.
