The Ministry of Public Works and Transport wishes to advise the public that it proposes to change the traffic direction on a portion of both Robinson Road and Palm Tree Avenue in order to improve the flow of traffic.
As a result of Market Street becoming one way southbound, the volume of traffic entering Robinson Road has increased significantly. It is proposed that to reduce traffic congestion, Robinson Road between Baillou Hill Road and Market Street should become one way westbound, and Palm Tree Avenue between Baillou Hill Road and Market Street should become oneway eastbound.
Further, it is proposed that there will be no entry onto Robinson Road from First Street or Second Street, and right turns only from Robinson Road onto First Street and Second Street will be allowed. Additionally, it is proposed that access from Roberta Drive onto Robinson Road be closed permanently.
This work is a part of the ongoing New Providence Infrastructure Improvement Project (NPIIP) whose overall goal is to reduce traffic congestion in New Providence and enhance the infrastructure needed to support a growing population, through the following objectives:
- Infrastructure development, improvement and maintenance
- Upgrading and installing new water mains, electricity and telecommunications cables throughout New Providence
- Enhancing the overall transport system in New Providence
- Increasing capacity within The Ministry of Public Works and Transport
- Protection and enhancement of the natural environment through a recreational space known as Big Pond in central New Providence.
Additional benefits include reduced journeying time, more discretionary time and improved safety. There are also economic benefits such as less ‘stop and start’ traffic which will mean better fuel efficiency, while smoother road surfaces will mean less damage to vehicles and reduced travel costs.
The Ministry will be holding two consultative meetings regarding the proposed traffic scheme for Robinson Road and Palm Tree Avenue on Monday 23 January and Tuesday 24 January 2012. Both meetings will be at 6:30 pm at First Baptist Church. The public, particularly residents and business owners in the area, are invited to attend.
