ELEUTHERA, The Bahamas — Scott Kelly’s team, White Rat, won the inaugural Cape Eleuthera Wahoo Tournament, narrowly beating second place finisher, Rake N’ Scrape, by 7.5 pounds. White Rat’s five largest wahoo totaled 262.6 pounds. White Rat’s score was aided by an impressive 81.5 pound wahoo weighed on Day Two of the three-day event, hosted by the Cape Eleuthera Resort & Yacht Club.
For the win, White Rat received a specially designed trophy from Cape Eleuthera’s General Manager Stephen Kappeler. Also, Scott Kelly was presented with a certificate for $1,000 in Shell oil products from Arthur Turnquest, regional manager for Sun Oil Bahamas, the tournament’s major sponsor.
White Rat’s big wahoo was the largest weighed during the tournament and earned Kelly’s Nassau based team a hand-crafted Randy Rich trophy.
Team Rake N’ Scrape weighed a 71.5 pound wahoo on day one and a 68.8 pounder on day two, but the total weight of their five heaviest wahoo was not enough to catch White Rat. Jeff Waugh’s team, also Nassau based, finished with 255.1 pounds, securing second place.
Ramblin Man, another competitor hailing from New Providence, took third place. Neil McKinney’s team was hampered by a temperamental depth sounder but that didn’t diminish their enthusiasm. A couple of 45 pounders on day one certainly helped team spirits.
Because of features like the modern, surge-proof, full service marina and the luxury, two-storytownhouses, Cape Eleuthera proved to be a popular venue with the tournament fishermen and their families. During the tournament, thanks to the help of sponsors Sands Beer, Bacardi, and Bristol Wines & Spirits, the anglers were treated to coolers of cold beer at weigh-in and hosted parties in the evenings. A dinner of Buttonwood Smoked Mahi-Mahi, Oriental Beef Stir Fry and Island Smoked Ribs was a welcomed meal after a long day of wahoo fishing.
Dates for the 2nd Annual Cape Eleuthera Wahoo Tournament are set for January 16-19, 2013. For more information regarding the Cape Eleuthera Resort & Yacht Club or the annual wahoo tournament, interested persons are asked to visit www.capeeleuthera.com
