Local police have almost completed their investigation into the alleged suicide of a British man, who died aboard a Bahamian-registered cruise ship earlier this month.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Anthony Ferguson said a team from the Central Detective Unit was dispatched to investigate the man’s death after he fell from the Allure of the Seas.
The 30-year-old man is said to have fallen from the balcony of his room on Deck 11 of the ship.
At the time, the cruise liner was off the coast of Mexico.
“That is one of those matters that is almost completed. Pretty soon we ought to be in a position to release our findings on that,” ACP Ferguson told reporters at a press conference at police headquarters yesterday.
Local police are called to investigate matters that occur in international waters if the death took place on a Bahamian-registered ship.
Ferguson said an official cause of death would be made known once the matter is concluded.
The death is one of several alleged suicides aboard cruise ships that police are investigating.
In January a South Carolina man who was on board the Carnival Fantasy cruise ship reportedly jumped from one of the cruise ship’s upper levels to a lobby level.
The ship was docked at the Prince George Wharf when the incident occurred.
The 26-year-old died at the scene.
A crew member of Royal Caribbean’s Monarch of the Seas died in early January after he allegedly jumped from the ship.
The cruise liner was six miles from the Prince George Wharf when the 25-year-old allegedly killed himself.
ACP Ferguson said once the investigations into these matters finished, police will turn their findings over to the Attorney General’s Office.
