Two events this week have warmed our heart and vindicated our strong belief in the commitment of the local business sector to Jamaica’s development.
We speak of the expansion to Mandeville of wholesale club MegaMart and the launch by Sandals Resorts International of an education programme for its staff across the Caribbean.
…The country was given the details of the new Sandals Corporate University (SCU) at a function in Ocho Rios attended by four Caribbean prime ministers. That in itself is no small feat.
The endorsements of prime ministers Portia Simpson Miller of Jamaica, Dr Kenny Anthony of St Lucia, Baldwin Spencer of Antigua & Barbuda, and Hubert Ingraham of The Bahamas speak volumes to the respect they have for the resort chain that has, over the past 30 years, attracted millions of visitors to the region, kept thousands of Caribbean people employed and contributed significantly to the economies of the countries in which Sandals operates.
Now, through its corporate university, Sandals is investing US$5 million over the next five years in the education of more than 6,000 employees across the Caribbean.
In addition to assisting staff with acquiring CXC subjects, the SCU will offer employees certification up to a bachelor’s degree in a number of areas in hospitality management.
