A married couple suspected of committing 96 counts of fraud is expected to face charges in a magistrate’s court on Monday, police said.
The 43-year-old Bahamian man and 32-year-old American woman were arrested on Monday after police conducted a search of their western New Providence home. Police found several items that were allegedly obtained fraudulently.
The couple was expected to be charged yesterday morning, however the case was postponed as magistrates attended a legal conference.
According to police reports, the man and woman will each be charged with 39 counts of possession of forged documents, uttering forged documents and fraud by false pretenses.
Police said they became aware of the couple’s alleged fraudulent activity when the alleged victim noticed suspicious charges on his credit card.
The couple allegedly racked up over $40,000 in bills at more than 30 locations including designer clothing stores, grocery stores, “number houses”, furniture shores, upscale restaurants and local bars.
The alleged fraudulent activity took place in February.
The Nassau Guardian understands that the 43-year-old man was deported to The Bahamas from The United States late last year.
