Officials at Baha Mar have denied claims that the huge development is destroying Cable Beach.
In a letter to the editors of local media, a writer expressed concern that a new rock wall being constructed as part of the massive devlopment project was causing harm to the beach along the Cable Beach strip.
Development representatives say that the rock wall is only phase one of a larger beach extension project. They say that, when the project is completed, it will bring Cable Beach back to its 1970s shoreline.
Senior Project Manager Adam Piers told a local reporter that the beach restoration programme will be completed in two phases. The first phase deals with building a surge wall. That phase is expected to be completed in the next few weeks.
The second phase will focus on offshore breakwaters. This is intended to provide protection for future snorkeling and other water based activities, Mr Pier said. The second phase is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Once these works have been completed, sand will be progressively introduced to provide a continuous beach, similar to that of the 1970’s. The beach wilol stretch form Goodmans Bay to the western end of the Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort.
