Police are looking for 52-year-old Chancelaire Baptiste, who is wanted for questioning in connection with the deaths of eleven Haitian nationals due to the overloading of a boat with smuggled immigrants. The incident occurred in North Abaco on Sunday June 10.
This man is believed to be a low-level player in people-smuggling operations in The Bahamas. The name of the Bahamians who are masterminding the criminal activities have yet to be released. Also, despite what has been written, it is not clear if this man was just the captain or the owner of the boat too, but it is suspected that he is not the boat owner.
Twenty-eaight people were aboard the vessel which sank off Abaco late Sunday night resulting in the death of 11 passengers. Twelve passengers are still missing.
Police Commissioner Ellison Greenslade said the captain is responsible for the deaths of the persons authorities believe were a part of an illegal human trafficking operation.
