Coming off the heels of the celebrations of the 39th year of Independence for the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, the small nation of over three hundred thousand proud Bahamians had another reason to celebrate as the black, gold and aquamarine Bahamian Flag was again hoisted and the Bahamian national anthem was played thousands of miles across the seas at the Montjuic Olympian Stadium in Barcelona, Spain.
On Friday night, one female Bahamian stood alone atop the gold medal podium among 180 countries at the 14th IAAF World Junior Championships as sprint sensation Anthonique Strachan became the first Bahamian to win two gold medals at the World championships.
Strachan made history running out of lane four in the finals of the women’s 200 meters by blazing across the finish line in a personal best time of 22.53 and also setting a new Championship Games record.
Olivia Ekpone of the United States finished second in a time of 23.15 followed by her country woman Dezerea Bryant who also clocked 23.15.
Earlier in the week (on Tuesday), Strachan took the gold medal in the women’s 100m with a new world junior leading time of 11.20s.
She became the second consecutive Bahamian sprinter to win a gold medal at the World Junior Championships after Shaunae Miller took the women’s 400m in Moncton, Canada, in 2010.
Strachan was a double gold medalist in the 100m and 200m at the 2011 and 2012 CARIFTA Games.
