Bastille Day is the French national holiday which is celebrated on 14 July of each year. In France, it is formally called La Fête Nationale (The National Celebration) and commonly le quatorze juillet (the fourteenth of July).
It commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789; the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern nation, and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the First Republic, during the French Revolution. Festivities are held on the morning of 14 July, on the Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris in front of the President of the Republic.
The Alliance Française des Bahamas celebrates the Bastille day celebrations every year on July 14th with an evening of fine dining. The Honorary French Consul, Mr. Dominique LEFEVRE gives a short, traditional speech followed by the singing of the French national anthem.
The event will be held on Saturday, July 14th at 7:00 pm at the newest place in Sandyport to dine or just relax, the Twisted Lime, and will include a silent auction to raise funds for the Alliance Française cultural/non-profit events for the upcoming year as well as the promotion of the French language to the youth of The Bahamas. French music, traditional and new will set the ambience for the evening. The event is entitled: SOIREE BLEU, BLANC, ROUGE (blue, white and red) which are the colours of the French flag. Patrons are asked to dress casually but elegantly in either blue, white or red, or any combination thereof.
Local artists and businesses in Nassau, French and Bahamian, are participating in making the event special. Many thanks to the sponsors and benefactors of the evening without whom this would not have been possible: Société Générale Private Banking, Thierry Lamare, artist; Burns House for French wines and liqueurs, Crédit Agricole Private Banking, Caroline Grandpierre Anderson from Accès Océane, Café Matisse, Twisted Lime, Sandyport for hosting the event, Alliance Française des Bahamas, Vanessa Scott of Vanessa’s creations, the volunteers and friends of the Alliance Française and Yodephy Dance and Modelling Academy for the cancan dancer costumes and all others who are not mentioned for any reason at the time this release was sent to the Press.
