NASSAU, BAHAMAS – More than 40 students selected from schools in the St. Anne’s Constituency participated in the first annual St. Anne’s Constituency Summer Camp held for four weeks at the St. Anne’s Anglican Church rectory community centre.
Students of all ages enjoyed math, reading, art, Spanish, music, and PE while being mentored by rising high school seniors and adult supervisors. The campers also participated in field trips that included; touring various historical landmarks around Nassau, a trip to the main New Providence Fire Department, making Junkanoo pieces with Arlene Nash Ferguson at Educulture and meeting dolphins face-to-face at Dolphin Encounters on Blue Lagoon Island.
“Setting the foundation for our future begins with our youth,” said Hubert A. Chipman, Member of Parliament for the St. Anne’s Constituency, who along with his wife Roxanne, created the summer camp program. “We promised our constituents that we would focus on what is most important to them and certainly their children’s education is a high priority. Our program was planned to develop the child, both academically and socially in a clean, safe, educational environment.
“The goal was to give each child a head start in specific academic areas in preparation for the new school year. This would ensure that our kids would be ready to face new challenges with a positive attitude. We are pleased to report that our campers also participated in discussions pertaining to conflict resolution techniques, both in and outside the classroom. It is our hope that our campers will grow to be become productive citizens who will contribute to the development of their country.”
The St. Anne’s Constituency Summer Camp curriculum was designed by Roxanne Chipman, a former schoolteacher for many years at St. Augustine’s College and current owner and administrator of Gleniston Centre For Learning, Ltd.
“Our summer camp was offered free of charge and we were committed to giving students an educational program that reinforced the basics but also offered them time to have fun, exercise and enjoy interesting fieldtrips,” added Mrs. Chipman. “We were so pleased to see their progress throughout the camp.”
Mrs. Chipman, along with volunteers Joia Archer and Dedrie Woods, ran the summer camp with the assistance of high school students who donated their time and received community credits. Other volunteers assisted and St. Anne’s constituents along with the Inner Wheel Club of East Nassau donated snacks and drinks for students for the four weeks.
“We are grateful to our volunteers, sponsors and the wonderful constituents of St. Anne’s for their continued support,” added Mr. Chipman at the end of camp appreciation ceremony.
“We especially thank Father Hugh Bartlett of St. Anne’s Anglican Church for his support and the use of the beautiful community centre. The first St. Anne’s Constituency Summer Camp was a tremendous success and we hope to enlarge our student and volunteer base to accommodate more students in the coming years.”
