Bahamian Olympic athlete Shamar Sands took a nasty fall after hitting a hurdle in the men’s 100-meter hurdles during the athletics competition in the Olympic Stadium at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
He was disqualified.
There was also a disqualification for the Madagascar runner who, in the same race, jumped the gun in lane three.
But Sands isn’t the only athlete who got tripped up (pardon the pun) on the hurdles.
2004 Olympic champion Liu Xiang is also out of the London Gamesafter he crashed on the first hurdle of his 100-meter heat.
Poor guy had to hop on one leg all the way to the other end of the stadium to exit.
In heat six, the Hungarian runner sustained a muscle injury and an athlete from Barbados also fell at the first hurdle. Another from Senegal was later disqualified.
The British runner failed to finish.
The Trinidad and Tobago runner clattered to the finish line leaving behind a trail of 10 splayed hurdles.
Despite their valiant efforts, Team Bahamas hasn’t exactly been racking up the medals in London. But that hasn’t stopped thousands of Bahamians from following the games closely. Nor does it dampen the pride that the country has for its athletes.
