As heavily armed police officers stood guard outside the South Street Magistrates Court Complex, Stephen ‘Die’ Stubbs was sentenced on Friday to four years in prison for conspiracy to import marijuana and conspiracy to possess marijuana with intent to supply.
Stubbs, 37, has spent the first night of four years behind bars after he and two other men who took part in a $6 million drug smuggling operation were convicted and sentenced. Stubbs will spend an additional year in prison if he does not pay a $50,000 fine. The conviction is Stubbs’ first in 14 years, although he has been arrested numerous times since 1998.
The top brass of the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) and other high-ranking policemen crowded into the courtroom of Deputy Chief Magistrate Carolita Bethell while she delivered her decision in the prosecution’s case against Stubbs, Dion Minnis, 38, and Selva Hudson, 57.
Minnis was also convicted of conspiracy to import marijuana and conspiracy to possess marijuana with intent to supply. He was given the maximum sentence of five years.
According to the prosecution, Stubbs and Minnis, who is also known as Buju, organized the shipment of 3,935 pounds of marijuana from Jamaica to The Bahamas.
DEU officers uncovered the conspiracy to smuggle the drugs through telephone intercepts.
Boat mechanic Selva Hudson was arrested at Exuma, where police discovered 100 bales of marijuana concealed under a tarp in bushes. Two men escaped, but officers captured Hudson who kept falling down over the rough terrain.
