Atlantis plans to spend at least $10 million on new gaming facilities if and when the government approves updated casino regulations for the country.
The Paradise Island mega resort has revealed that a 10,000-square-foot space beneath Aura Nightclub has been earmarked for a massive sports betting arena that rivals existing offerings in Las Vegas. A separate room has also been sectioned off for poker tournaments throughout the day.
The addition of these gaming facilities would complement what is already considered to be the largest casino in the Caribbean.
The disclosure by the resort’s top executive follows aggressive lobbying by the Casino Association Committee, a sub-division of the Bahamas Hotel Association, to update the country’s gaming regulations. Tourism leaders are warning government that The Bahamas is at risk of falling significantly behind other jurisdictions when it comes to gambling amenities.
Robert ‘Sandy’ Sands, senior vice president of administration and external affairs at Baha Mar, has remained vocal on the issue of reform, and even penned an editorial which ran in both major dailies.
Sands and other executives, including Andre Rollins, the chairman of the Gaming Board, have traveled to major gaming destinations around the world in recent months to gather ideas and recommendations on best practices.
