Murder Convict’s Appeal Postponed

A murder convict’s appeal against his conviction has been postponed because of missing transcripts.

Michael Beckford, Jr. is serving a life sentence for the October 2008 murder of his girlfriend Sheanda Newton. He was convicted in April 2011.

Prosecutors alleged that Beckford slit Newton’s throat and dumped her partially naked body off the C.W. Saunders Highway before burning it.

Police investigators claimed Beckford killed Newton over an argument about whether she had given him AIDS. However, Beckford denied killing Ms Newton, knowing her, or having AIDS.

The appeal has been adjourned to January 24. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty.
