Opposition Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis said the Free National Movement’s (FNM) legal team will investigate the decision by the Office of the Attorney General to drop a gun case against two former clients of Attorney General Allyson Maynard-Gibson.
In compliance with a directive from Acting Attorney General Jerome Fitzgerald, a magistrate on Friday discharged the case against a couple who allegedly had a loaded gun in their home.
Maynard-Gibson represented the defendants, George and Janice Hayes, until her appointment as attorney general in May 2012.
Fitzgerald, who took over Maynard-Gibson’s duties while she was out of the country, signed the order. Minnis questioned why the case was dropped.
“I would have been concerned with why Damian Gomez, who is minister of state for legal affairs, who I would think would be acting attorney general, why he didn’t sign,” Minnis said on Monday.
“And this was a case that was represented by the attorney general initially and now came up. It definitely needs investigation to ensure no conflict.
“…The FNM will monitor this closely and have our legal team and legal minds research and look into it, and we will deal with it appropriately.”
