Public Angry Over Negated Vote

East Grand Bahama MP Peter Turnquest said the public has been left “confused and angry” in the aftermath of the gambling referendum.

Turnquest also hit out at Attorney General Allyson Maynard-Gibson for allegedly not giving the government “better advice” on the gaming referendum.

His comments came in the House of Assembly shortly after lawyer Wayne Munroe filed an injunction in the Supreme Court to prevent the government from shutting down web shop gaming. Munroe was granted a conservatory order allowing web shops to conduct their gaming operations until the case is heard in court.

The injunction was filed the day after Prime Minister Perry Christie ordered all web shops and their patrons to cease gambling or face arrest and prosecution, following the results of Monday’s referendum.

Turnquest said the public had put faith in the government to follow through with its promises and was now left in limbo.

“They voted for a government that outlined to them plans that [they] expected to be implemented,” Turnquest said. “The Bahamian people today are incredibly confused, and quite frankly angry, because as has been referenced previously we are now made aware of some injunction that has basically – for lack of a better definition – negated the whole exercise,” he said.
