After receiving a wake-up call in the form of the recent Mayaguana plane crash in which three people were killed, the government is finally promising serious attention to emergency lighting at all public airports in the country.
In an effort to pick up the ailing Rev Robert Black, the aircraft attempted an emergency landing at night on Mayaguana’s unlit, damaged to runway. As it landed it clipped one car then collided with another. The second car burst into flames killing the three people inside.
It is reflects badly on government that the Mayaguana airport and others throughout the Bahamas have been forced to light runways by vehicle lights.
Speaking to parliamentarians, Aviation Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin was critical of the fact that there is no proper maintenance programme of solar emergency lights nationwide.
Of course, the Mayaguana incident spurred a blame game between the PLP administration and the FNM.
