Baroness and former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher died at the Ritz Hotel on Monday, April 8, 2013 after suffering from a stroke.
“We’ve lost a great prime minister, a great leader, a great Briton,” Prime Minister David Cameron said. “She didn’t just lead our country, she saved our country, and I believe she’ll go down as the greatest British peacetime prime minister.”
Nicknamed the Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher governed Britain from 1979 to 1990.
Thatcher will be remembered not only as Britain’s first female prime minister, but as the woman who transformed Britain’s economy.
Lady Thatcher had become increasingly frail in recent years following a series of small strokes in 2001 and 2002. Ill-health prevented her attending the Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey.
She is survived by her two children, Sir Mark and Carol.
